Apple just made its cheapest iPhone worth buying again — and this time, it didn’t cut the corners that matter.
The iPhone 17e launched in March 2026 at $599, and it brings two upgrades that were conspicuously missing from last year’s 16e: MagSafe and a bigger starting storage. On paper those sound like incremental tweaks. In daily use, they change the phone more than the specs sheet suggests.

What’s New
The headline upgrade is the A19 chip — the same processor inside the standard iPhone 17. Compared to the A18 in the 16e, it delivers around 30% faster graphics and meaningfully better AI performance through an upgraded 16-core Neural Engine. Apple Intelligence features run noticeably smoother, and the chip should keep this phone fast for the next four to five years without breaking a sweat.
MagSafe is the other big addition. The 16e had basic Qi wireless charging at a slow 7.5W — the 17e jumps to 15W MagSafe, which effectively halves your wireless charging time. It also opens up the whole ecosystem of MagSafe wallets, mounts, and accessories that previously required a more expensive iPhone. For a lot of people, this alone justifies the upgrade.
Storage now starts at 256GB — double the 16e’s 128GB base — at the same $599 price. The camera also gets a portrait mode boost: the 48MP sensor now recognises people, dogs, and cats automatically and saves depth data so you can adjust focus and blur after the fact in Photos. The new C1X modem replaces the original C1, delivering up to 2x faster 5G speeds in the same cellular bands.
Who Is This For?
This is the iPhone to buy if you’re coming from an iPhone 13, 14, or anything older and don’t want to spend $799+ on the standard 17. You get the same chip, the same camera system improvements, and MagSafe — the main things you’d miss from the pricier model are the Dynamic Island, the extra camera lenses, and the slightly brighter display.
If you already own a 16e and are happy with it, the upgrade is harder to justify unless wireless charging speed genuinely frustrates you. But if you’re buying new or switching from Android under $700, the 17e is the clear choice in Apple’s lineup right now.
What We Like
- ✅ A19 chip — same silicon as iPhone 17, ensures 5+ years of fast, supported performance
- ✅ MagSafe at 15W — finally fast wireless charging plus access to the full MagSafe accessory ecosystem
- ✅ 256GB base storage at $599 — more space than the 16e at the same price
- ✅ Ceramic Shield 2 display — 3x better scratch resistance and noticeably less glare outdoors
Worth Knowing Before You Buy
- ⚠️ Still uses a notch, not Dynamic Island — you won’t get the live activity display features of the standard iPhone 17
- ⚠️ Single rear camera — no ultra-wide or telephoto lens; fine for most people but limiting if you shoot variety
Our Take
The iPhone 17e is the best value iPhone Apple has made in years. At $599 with 256GB, MagSafe, and the A19 chip, it undercuts the competition and closes most of the gap with Apple’s more expensive models. If you want an iPhone without paying iPhone 17 money, this is the one to get.
